About This Quote

The Panopticon was built as a prison in Britain in 1791. The building was designed to allow the guards to watch all of the prisoners at all times. To make sure that the guards were looking only at the prisoners, the building had towering walls and floors and curved corners. With such a design, it would be impossible for anyone to see around the corner and see the guards.
